on the fight to come

Like many of you, we are devastated by the results of last week’s election. A Trump presidency is a crushing blow to the rights of women, people of color, LGBTQ folks, Muslims, immigrants, the disabled, the poor – in short, everyone except rich white men. We don’t have anything new to say, but if, like us, you’re ready to show up and fight, here are some things you can do.

  1. Donate your money and/or time. Keep in mind that organizations are better able to plan big actions and projects when they have recurring monetary donations to count on, so consider a small recurring monthly donation if you’re financially able.   2. Β Pay attention and call your representatives. Don’t Facebook, don’t email, don’t write a letter – CALL. It’s the most reliable way to be heard. For starters, you can call your Congressperson(s) and ask if he or she is planning to condemn the appointment of Stephen Bannon, a known white nationalist, as Trump’s chief strategist. Leave your information, ask for a call back, and remind them who they represent.
  3. Support candidates you believe in at the local level. Volunteer time and money, phone bank. Find out about groups that fund liberal and independent candidates and fight to get them support.
  4. VOTE IN THE 2018 MIDTERMS.
  5. Take to the streets. A lot of the organizations I listed above have weekly action newsletters that keep you alerted to protests, demonstrations, and meetings that you can attend.   6. Don’t get complacent. This is going to be a long four years, and the work of resistance will be constant. BUT
  7. Take care of yourselves! Take a break when you need it. Surround yourself with people who love you. Prioritize your rest and health. Feed your body and your soul. Don’t feel guilty if you need to take a night off to drink wine and watch Netflix and cry. Let yourself enjoy what you’re able to enjoy. And know that we’re fighting with you.

Next week we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming, because we’re not going to let a fascist Cheeto rob us of our joy or sense of fun. As our last post drove home, getting dressed can connect us to our power, and we are always here for that.
